It’s been a wild couple of weeks for the Broadcasters. We’ve been all over eastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia (aka Carter Family Country), the Triangle of North Carolina, and of course, playing shows at our favorite local spots in Charleston. We’ve gotten some incredible write-ups in the paper and met some fantastic fans and fellow musicians along the way. We even got the chance to play for the revered WUNC radio show, The State of Things with Frank Statio. That was officially, the coolest thing ever, especially considering the other great musicians and personalities that have graced that studio at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, NC.

Looking back over the past six months has been incredible. We’ve driven so many miles, seen so many faces, and put our everything into these songs that we love….and we’re not slowing down. As soon as I’m done with exams (oh, the joys of being a full-time musician and a full-time student), we’ll be recording an album. And then we’re off again, with a full schedule for 2013 including MerleFest and a northeast tour.

Thanks for reading along with our adventures and following our shenanigans. As bizarre or mildly amusing as they may be, these stories make up our lives and we’re flattered that you take the time to tune in every once and a while.

Help celebrate the last day of my third semester of college by joining us at The Eddy Pub in my hometown of Saxapahaw, NC on December 14th at 8pm. Our last show at The Eddy was fantastic and I can’t think of a better way to forget about exams and gear up for our time in the studio than with our friends at the show. But before we get rowdy in Saxapahaw, here are some photos of the shenanigans of late. Cheers!

We had a spectacular weekend in the North Carolina Mountains. Complete with our first appearance on WNCW Studio B, a concert and Fletcher Feed & Seed, and a show at The Purple Onion in Saluda. And we even got a write-up in the Asheville Citizen!

Studio B was so much fun, especially since we got to spend the morning with the remarkable Dennis Jones and Martin Andersen. When it comes to all things technical, Dennis really knows his stuff. I was totally impressed with how quickly and efficiently he dialed in the sound. Martin was a great interviewer and made us feel at home in the studio. Our time at WNCW was the best!

Fletcher Feed & Seed is one of the neatest venues we’ve played so far. Housed in an restored supply store at a crossroads in Fletcher, North Carolina, Fletcher Feed & Seeds operates as a church on Sundays and Wednesdays and a concert hall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. So many brave, fantastic dancers filled the audience and even more kind faces than that could be seen from the stage. We heard of several folks that caught our show on the radio and drove across and around and through the mountains to be at our show. That’s plain amazing!

Our show on Saturday night was at The Purple Onion in Saluda, North Carolina. The food was killer (if you go, get the butternut squash risotto) and our crowd was so fun -lots of dancing and whoopin’ and hollerin’. We met some great folks from Charleston and that made us feel right at home. Susan, the wonderful proprietor of The Purple Onion, treated us to some amazing desserts after the show. I have to say, my selection of pumpkin bread pudding (with cranberry caramel sauce and maple whipped cream) was the best. David’s peanut butter pie and Ivy’s Tiramisu were both tied for close seconds. So if you’re up in Polk County, visit The Purple Onion for delicious fare and toe-tapping music.

We have the weekend off which is a little bittersweet. But never fear, the Broadcasters will be back in full swing next weekend with a big show at The Down Home (!!!) in Johnson City, Tennessee, Voice of The Blue Ridge at The Earle Theater in Mt. Airy, NC, and a little time in the studio. Party time, y’all. See you on the road.

SAXAPAHAW — Sarah Osborne was sitting on the front row of a barbecue restaurant last July when musical duo Ivy and David Sheppard invited her on stage to sing along. Sarah didn’t realize that the impromptu concert would turn into a gig with the South Carolina Broadcasters, an old-time trio that has performed throughout North and South Carolina, including a recent concert at the annual Carousel Festival in downtown Burlington. A free show will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Eddy Pub, 1715 Saxapahaw-Bethlehem Church Road. “We love her to pieces. It’s as if she sort of fell out of the heavens,” David Sheppard said in a recent phone interview from Summerville, S.C., where he owns and operates David Sheppard Instruments and Repairs. David and his wife, Ivy, perform both as a duo and trio along with Osborne. Ivy grew up on a farm and became fascinated with the banjo at age 17 after purchasing one at David’s store. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me — in more ways than one,” she said. “My younger brother was taking electric guitar lessons and he showed me how to play a D chord and my life changed in that moment.”

If you’re like us and can’t wait 44 days for our next show at The Eddy, tune into our Studio B show on WNCW 88.7 (Boone 92.9 FM, Charlotte 99.1, 100.3 FM; Greenville 97.3 FM, Wilkesboro 90.9 FM) this Friday at 11am. We’re kind of excited…

Lots of Light for our friends in the wake of Sandy. We’re thinking of you!

Sometimes something magical happens on stage. Music flows through your fingers in a way you can’t explain. It’s a rare and wonderful experience for performers and spectators alike, and it’s the reason we work so hard to play music. Saturday night at The Eddy Pub in Saxapahaw was one of those nights. It’s a feeling like none else, and we want to thank all the wonderful people who came out to our show.

Thanks to Carol McDuffie of Lovin’ Bluegrass for the picture

Saturday, October 20th wasn’t just any day. It was the day The South Carolina Broadcasters went to the North Carolina State Fair. Well, let me tell you, we had a full rich day. Around 7:30 Saturday morning we arrived to the fairgrounds and headed over to the “Bascom Lamar Lunsford” Folk Festival to see when we’d perform. There must’ve been 10000 little girls with taps! The competition began at 9am and we were third on the list, so we tuned up and tried to get our voices warmed up for the early morning singing. I reckon we did alright.

After round one we set off to see the sites. Cows, pigs, cakes, goats, french fries, bright lights, and bad, bad music. Sarah took a ride on the school bus and then we took a Bible Knowledge Quiz!!

We’re not going to Hell!!

We competed in the second round of the folk competition and then headed back to Peace College for a much needed nap. A little sleepy but happy from our day of fun we headed over to Saxapahaw for what turned out to be a wonderful and most memorable night.

OCTOBER 20, 2012 = A GREAT DAY. We got 2nd Place in the Folk Festival and had a tremendous musical experience at The Eddy that will not soon be forgotten!!

Amtrak is my mode of transportation this week. Good thing this train has WiFi. I’m headed on back to school to buckle-down and finish out my semester. I miss Charleston already.

Reason #16: Charleston

With midterms in the past and a full schedule of fun shows planned, Friday was the start of our Fall Break. Not only did we get to dine with the one and only Johnny Williams, but we enjoyed practicing a few (new!) songs as well.

On Saturday, we ventured up through Virginia to Roanoke. We drove through gorgeous Franklin County with its horse farms, changing leaves, and Moonshine Capital of the World credibility (have y’all seen Lawless yet?). We made it to Roanoke County and played at Toast of the Valley wine festival along with the immensely talented Larry Gillis Band. They’re great players and kind folks and it was a treat to meet them!

Roanoke Farmer’s Market

We high-tailed it back to South Carolina for a show at Thornhill Farms. A hundred acres in the low with organic crops and some of the friendliest farm animals is also home to Adaptive Gardens, an incredible organization that enriches the lives of those with special needs through recreational horticulture activities. The Adaptive Gardens directors, Leslie and Jodie, are doing a wonderful thing for the community of McClellanvile and we’re blessed to have been apart of their Music on The Farm Benefit. The day wouldn’t have been possible without Awendaw Green (Eddie and the guys are the best! Thanks for handling the sound!), Dangermuffin, and Oh Valentino. So cool to share the stage with these fine musicians.

These guys are killer. I was completely impressed. Give them a listen, or better yet, go to a show and tell me you don’t feel like you’re in Europe. Seriously.

Reason #22: Making friends with an accordion player

Just a few more stops and I’ll be back in The Old North State.

They didn’t make me check my banjo and they have free WiFi! I’m not going to lie, I felt like a rockstar. How often does a girl get to leave class early to fly to a show? Sometimes I wonder if I’m dreaming.

Despite the minor panic attack I had when I forgot about the time change (I thought I was going to have to tune my banjo and change into my “costume” mid-flight), the trip went very well.

David, Ivy and I fell in love with Lowe Mill – a renovated cotton mill with 100,000 square feet and three floors full of space for artists and entertainers to sell goods, teach classes, perform, and be inspired. There’s also The Happy Tummy, a vegetarian friendly spot which provided the perfect pre-show supper.

We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to perform in the Lowe Mill Concerts on the Dock series. From April to October, the city of Huntsville welcomes artists from all across the country to perform on the historic loading dock. The concert was so fun – super laid back with lots of families and four-legged pals. We just loved all of the hoopers, dancers, and our friends at Crave Sno Cones who treated us to a treat aka the best snow cone ever after the show.

And as if that wasn’t enough fun, we had the privilege to visit Bandito Southside to see our good friend Tucker and his band, Bourbon & Shamrocks. We couldn’t say no to their charming faces and rowdy songs, so when they asked, we hopped on stage for a few tunes ourselves. Thanks, guys! And thank you Huntsville! It was a very sweet trip to Alabama.

We’re doing some traveling this weekend. Come celebrate Fall Break with the Broadcasters at Toast of the Valley in Roanoke, Virginia, Music on the Farm at Adaptive Gardens, and one of our favorite local gigs, Yo Burrito . Last weekend was very bittersweet. The Broadcasters went to Hoppin’ John Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers’ Convention in beautiful Silk Hope, North Carolina. It was such a treat to spend time at Shakori Hills with our friends and fellow musicians but it was also the last fiddlers convention of the year.

While we were in the area, we visited my home county for a show at the Burlington Carousel Festival. So much fun. We loved the amphitheater.

There’s so much to look forward to about fall (Fairs! Festivals! And pumpkin flavored everything!) but I think we’re all genuinely bummed that we’re done camping and competing for the year.

September is proving to be a lovely month.

The band had some fun at my childhood home while the fabulous Abi Christoph directed us in a rainy day photoshoot. We loved romping around with the animals and attempting to keep straight faces as Abi captured the moment. Here’s a sneak peek:

On September 10th, we had a terrific evening playing for the Monday Night Concert Series at the College of Charleston. The venue was great – wonderful atmosphere, acoustics and audience. My dear friend Allyson joined us for the show and some Charlestonian adventures. It was a treat for the band to introduce my friend to old-time music. We listened to old-time music on the drive but it was at the show when Allyson felt the music for the first time. “I didn’t just hear the passion, I saw it and felt it. I’ve been won-over by old-time.”

SCB gear

You can't drive down 95 without stopping at South of the Border. It's just not possible.

In other news, Ivy makes a killer dessert. Opera cake is now the official dessert of the band.

We can’t wait to see y’all on the road soon! There’ll be enough opera cake to share. As long as it’s hidden from me.
